The earliest surnames in Sassano.

Of the 48 documented surnames on this page, 47 already show up in individuals born in the 1600s — some as early as the 1590s. All of these are estimated ("ABT" or "BEF") birth years rather than exact-dated records, reconstructed backward from later baptism, marriage, and death entries, so treat them as approximate. Two of these entries are recorded under an earlier spelling that later evolved into the modern surname: Fornino appears from 1608 as Florendino, and Romanelli appears from 1620 as Romaniello — both names track the same family lines, with the older spelling gradually giving way to the newer one over the following century or two. One surname — Finizio — doesn't yet have an indexed individual born before 1700; that likely reflects gaps in what's been transcribed so far rather than the family arriving later.

This table was substantially revised this update: recent work extending several branches back into the 1600s pushed nine surnames' earliest record further back than what this table previously showed — in a few cases by decades. Ricciardone moved from the 1640s to about 1610, d'Alessio from about 1629 to before 1601, Abbruzzese from the 1680s all the way back to about 1619, and Petrizzo from 1640 to about 1615, among others. None of this reflects a family arriving later than previously thought — it's the opposite: earlier records that simply hadn't been connected into the tree yet. One nice discovery along the way: the "new" earliest Feminella and the "new" earliest Ricciardone turn out to be the same couple, Martino Feminella & Perna Ricciardone — see the First Families table just below.

First families.

For each of the 48 surnames on this page, the earliest individual on record and — where the tree connects them — the spouse who completes that earliest known family unit. Most couples show no separate birthplace recorded for either partner, which in this parish-register tradition means Sassano itself; where a different town is explicitly recorded, it's called out in the last column. As with the "surnames by century" table above, two entries here are recorded under an earlier spelling that later evolved into the modern name: Fornino traces to Pietro Florendino & Isabella Bellhomine (ABT 1608), and Romanelli to Giovanni Agostino Romaniello & Giulia Truleo (ABT 1620) — both flagged with their older spelling in the table, and both cross-referenced on their surname cards below ("Also spelled: Florendino" / "Also spelled: Romaniello").

Two names stand out for their birthplace: Giovanni Vincenzo di Lisa was born in Monte San Giacomo, and Matteo Vincenzo Arenare in Morigerati — both small towns in the same Vallo di Diano district as Sassano, suggesting marriage brought them in rather than the family originating locally. Neither is confirmed as the very first of that name to arrive; they're simply the earliest the tree currently traces. Both lines run remarkably deep: Giovanni Vincenzo di Lisa has 4,316 traced descendants, 420 of them with a direct Chicago or Illinois record — including, several generations down a maternal line, Cono Stavola himself, the man the Home page credits as likely the first Sassanese to reach Chicago at all. Matteo Vincenzo Arenare's line is smaller — 368 descendants, 11 with a Chicago or Illinois record — but reaches Federal Street too, including two Chicago-born great-great-grandchildren recorded as "De Lisa." In both cases the Chicago connection runs through ordinary intermarriage over two and a half centuries rather than any direct emigration from Monte San Giacomo or Morigerati themselves — nobody in either line is recorded arriving in Sassano and then continuing on to Chicago within living memory of the move. It's Sassano's own dense web of intermarriage, not a second migration, that eventually carried both names to Federal Street.

The First Families table above only catches the single earliest record of each of the 48 surnames on this page — but it's not the whole picture. Widening the search to every individual born before 1750 with a documented birthplace other than Sassano turns up 90 people, the earliest from as far back as about 1611. Almost all of them come from the same tight cluster of neighboring towns in the Vallo di Diano and Cilento — Sanza, Padula, Santa Marina, Montesano sulla Marcellana, San Rufo, Buonabitacolo, Monte San Giacomo — the same short walk or ride that would have brought people to Sassano's own marriage market for centuries. A couple came from much further off: Giuseppe di Luca, born around 1650 in Morano Calabro, all the way in Calabria, and Emmanuele Vasquez, born around 1679 in Napoli itself.

For the 25 with a name, a known origin town, and at least 15 traced descendants, we ran the same Chicago/Illinois check used for di Lisa and Arenare above. The results are striking: several of these lines are now among the most Chicago-connected in the entire tree. Giovanni Battista Belleza, born about 1647 in Santa Marina, has 4,875 traced descendants — 537 of them with a direct Chicago or Illinois record, the single largest count of any pre-1750 outside-born ancestor found. Giuseppe di Luca's Calabrian line isn't far behind at 510, out of 6,064 descendants, the largest family tree of the group. Guglielmo Videtta, who arrived from Montesano sulla Marcellana around 1629, is worth a second look for site regulars: this is the same Videtta name behind the Pinto–Videtta family already documented on the Crisis Years page — their roots trace back to a man who wasn't born in Sassano at all.

As with di Lisa and Arenare, none of this represents a second, direct migration — nobody here is recorded moving from Padula or Sanza to Sassano and then straight on to Chicago within living memory. What it shows instead is how thoroughly these "outside" bloodlines were absorbed into Sassano's own intermarrying population over the following two or three centuries, until by the time Federal Street was being settled, a line that started in Santa Marina or Morano Calabro was, genealogically speaking, no different from one that had been in Sassano the whole time.
