A few more questions worth asking of the full tree: which families were the largest, who married youngest, who married most often, and which mothers may not have survived childbirth. For what happened to Sassano during the crisis years of 1817, 1837, 1862, and 1872, see Crisis Years.
The record remains Vito Luca Ramondino (1661–1725) and Angela Vittoria Libretti (1664–1724), married 23 Nov 1680, with 17 recorded children — two more than the next tier, Gaetano S di Lisa and Modesto Gruccio, each at 15. Their children's births span 26 years, from 1682 to 1708.

Of the 159 people in the tree born in Sassano who went on to die in Chicago, these are the 20 born earliest — the oldest members of the generation that made the crossing. The earliest of all, Maria Orlando, was born in 1835, a full 58 years before Cono Stavola's 1893 marriage record marks him as likely the first Sassanese to reach the city. Being early to arrive in Chicago and being old enough to have been born early in Sassano turn out to be two different things — Cono Stavola himself sits 14th on this list, meaning at least 13 people born in Sassano before him eventually died in Chicago too, whatever order they actually arrived in.

Some of the earlier candidates on this list turned out to be sibling name mix-ups, corrected as part of ongoing data cleanup — see the blog and project notes for a couple of those specific cases. The entry at the very top, Maria Volpe, is flagged in brick below: a newly added exact birth date (8 Jun 1866, replacing a previous approximate 1862) now computes her age at just 10 — below even the historical legal minimum documented on this page. That's a strong candidate for a transcription issue or a sibling mix-up rather than a real case, and worth checking against the original source before it's treated as settled.

Seeing a 10- or 12-year-old bride next to a groom in his 20s is jarring to read, and it should be — nothing here is meant to make it look ordinary by today's standards, because it wasn't ordinary by ours. But it was, in a very literal sense, ordinary by the standards of the time and place these records come from, and understanding why requires understanding a legal and social world quite different from the present one.
For most of the centuries these records cover, Catholic canon law set the minimum marriageable age at 12 for girls and 14 for boys — a standard dating to medieval church law that held, with only minor tightening, until 1917. Once Sassano came under the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies' 1819 civil code, that same 12/14 threshold became civil law as well, not just church teaching: these marriages were fully legal, under both the state and the church that recorded them. Marriage below the age of majority (21) required parental consent, meaning these were overwhelmingly matches arranged by families, not choices made by the children themselves.
This wasn't spread evenly across Italy. A 2023 demographic study of Montallegro, a small town in Sicily culturally and economically close to Sassano, used the same Kingdom-of-the-Two-Sicilies civil registers this site draws on and found brides aged 12–15 in roughly one marriage in six through the mid-1800s — almost exactly the share this data shows for Sassano. The practice declined sharply only after the marriage age was raised to 15 in 1866. And the study found something that complicates any simple story about desperation or poverty: these very young marriages weren't concentrated among the poorest families — they were, if anything, more common among wealthier, land-owning families, who used marriage strategically to consolidate property, alliances, and social standing, much like the patterns already visible in this site's own Family Alliances research. The average age gap between spouses in ordinary marriages ran about five years; in marriages involving a very young bride, it widened to eight years or more — closely matching the Groom's Age column above.
None of this made it right, even by the standards of the time. There were always people who found these unions troubling, and the eventual legal reforms — the marriage age rising to 15 in 1866, and much further over the following century — reflect a society slowly arriving at the same conclusion the modern world holds without hesitation today. What the historical record actually shows is a set of legal, religious, and economic structures — a marriageable age fixed by centuries-old canon law, a dowry system that rewarded marrying daughters off young, and a family-honor culture that gave girls very little say in the matter — that made these marriages possible, legal, and even strategically desirable to the adults arranging them, without making them any less what we would now unhesitatingly call child marriage.
"The minimum age for contracting marriage was 12 for women and 14 for men, with parents' consent."
Death records rarely stated a cause, so this can't be certain — but when a mother's death falls within days or weeks of one of her children being born, historically that's the classic signature of childbirth complications or puerperal (postpartum) fever, the leading cause of maternal death before antibiotics. 108 mothers in the tree show a death within 60 days of a birth; 10 died the very same day. Several of these mothers were delivering twins at the time — consistent with twin births carrying meaningfully higher risk, then as now.

Almost always widowhood remarriage rather than anything else — losing a spouse young and remarrying was simply how life worked for centuries before modern medicine. Living individuals are excluded.

Sixty brides and grooms in the tree — out of every marriage with an exact date on both the wedding and the death — didn't live to see their first anniversary, unchanged this update.
One couple didn't just marry and die within the same window — they died together. Michele Biase di Luca and Arcangela Florendino married 13 Apr 1825 and both died on the very same day, 14 Aug 1825, 123 days later. That date sits inside the ten-week autumn cluster already documented on the Crisis Years page, though no direct link between this couple and that pattern has been confirmed.
A second pair is worth noting for a sadder reason: Giovanni Ruggiero Libretti and Giovanna Laveglia married 14 Oct 1818. Giovanna died just 18 days later, on 1 Nov 1818. Giovanni outlived her by nearly a year, but he too was gone before their first anniversary, dying 1 Sep 1819 — 322 days after the wedding. Both husband and wife, gone within the same first year of marriage, though not on the same day.
Beyond those, the rest spread fairly evenly across the full year — several within the first few weeks, a cluster in the 100–300 day range, and a handful right up near the twelve-month mark. Brides and grooms appear in close to equal numbers.
"Michele Biase di Luca and Arcangela Florendino married in April 1825 and died on the same day that August, 123 days later."
