The years the tree remembers a famine.

Between 1815 and 1819, a volcanic eruption at Mount Tambora in Indonesia — the largest in recorded history — cooled the global climate enough to trigger widespread crop failure across Europe. 1816 became known as "The Year Without a Summer." Famine followed, and where famine goes, typhus and other disease follow close behind. Southern Italy was hit hard.

The tree shows it clearly, without needing to be told the history first: deaths jump from a baseline of about 67 a year to 145 a year on average across 1816–1818 — a 2.16× spike. 1817 alone recorded 244 deaths, by far the worst single year anywhere in the tree's 380-year span.

The hardest-hit surname was Calandriello (19 deaths in the three-year window), followed closely by d'Amato and d'Alessio (18 each). Fifty-nine individual families lost two or more children within the same three years — the worst single case, Giuseppe Gennaro Russo & Angelica Burzo, lost five adult children in barely two years. Their line still continued — most of those five had already had children of their own — but it's hard to imagine what those two years were actually like for them.
